Middle East Eye (MEE) is seeking a Graphic Journalist in London to drive our innovative storytelling for our digital audience.

Founded more than a decade ago, MEE’s award-winning reporters deliver insightful and thought-provoking content to a global audience.

We offer our readers unique on-the-ground news, analysis and comment that brings local viewpoints to the fore. 

As a graphic journalist you will be responsible for creating charts, maps and other forms of visual storytelling. 

Utilising your news judgement and reporting skills, you'll pursue graphic and stories that are timely, insightful and push our coverage forward.

The successful candidate must have a background in design, digital media and journalism. 

KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce clear, compelling and accurate graphics, including maps, charts and infographics, for our website and social media platforms
  • Work efficiently under a range of deadlines and produce timely graphics driven by planned and unplanned news events
  • Collaborate with our different editorial departments and choose the appropriate media and style to meet our editorial and business objectives
  • Keep up to date with emerging industry trends.

KEY ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Experience in a similar position, including a strong and relevant portfolio of creative design
  • High level of proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, as well as After Effects and Premier. 
  • Basic coding in HTML, CSS, JavaScript; experience of WordPress.
  • Mobile first approach to editorial design. Excellent sense of UX, including anticipating audience needs and understanding the user’s point of view.
  • A strong understanding of social media platforms and the ability to tailor graphics for each in format, size, and design
  • Possess experience or interest in topics core to MEE's news coverage and express an eagerness to develop subject-matter expertise in these areas

PREFERRED

  • Fluency in Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Persian or any other non-European languages common in the MENA region
  • A degree in graphic design is advantageous although other art and design subjects will be accepted, as well as journalism qualifications
  • The ability to produce hand-drawn illustrations
  • Understanding of media law
